While in an office setting, ergonomics is concerned with the height of the computer monitor, the placement of wrists on the desk, the type of mouse used, or if the chair is properly adjusted, the ergonomics related to operating controls of a piece of industrial machinery are more exhaustive.
That might not be the case with the operating controls of a piece of industrial machinery. Instead of adjusting things to fit you, solutions may – at times – involve fitting you to the job.
While chair and monitor heights are easily adjustable, things are more complex in an industrial setting.
In Industrial Ergonomics, how to raise a worker to a comfortable height so that they are not reaching / stretching / working overhead, how to prevent them from constant or repetitious bending, how to lessen the force necessary to turn a valve, how to reduce twisting, among others, are the issues to be tackled on the manufacturing or plant floor.
While some of these can be addressed by providing the workers with safe access and customizable work platforms, others could require the changing of tools being used (such as using a longer-handled tool) and yet others might need changing the process entirely.
In some instances, it could be a matter of training personnel to maintain the correct body postures or periodically changing a task. Ergonomics, when done properly, can save you a lot of money and prevent a great deal of pain and discomfort for your employees.
